Why Biosciences in India?
India’s software industry is estimated to have provided 15 million jobs and raised the country’s global profile. For biotechnology the global market forecast is estimated at $471 bn by 2025. India is presently among the top 12 global biotechnology destinations and is 3rd in the Asia Pacific region. It had a market size of $11.6 bn in 2017, but aspires to reach $100 bn by 2025 with enabling government policies, and public and private capital. This will provide a 21st century opportunity for brand building and job creation to India.
But there are gaps. While it has the 2nd highest numbers of FDA-approved manufacturing plants, India still commands only a meagre 2% of the global biotechnology business. Generation of knowledge and its translation into products and processes will be required to fill this gap and propel India forward in this sector.
